Volunteers needed for playground project

Oakwood Park targeted for renovation
Oct. 21, 2013 @ 04:16 PM
The Durham Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Durham Beautiful Inc. are asking people to volunteer to help renovate Oakwood Park.

They are looking for 40 people to lend a hand with prep work at the park on Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 200 to help with the actual "build day" on Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Oct. 31prep will ask volunteers to  sort and separate all the new playground equipment into build kits; cut lumber and prepare build kits for tables and benches; and assist with digging the holes for the support posts and other tasks to prepare for the build day.

On Nov. 2, volunteers will install the playground, build the benches and tables, install new gardens, and put the safety surfacing in place. Official are planning a 3 p.m. celebration of the completion of the project.

A grant from KaBOOM! Inc. is funding the work. The project is also receiving support from Disney, WTVD and several local businesses.

Volunteers will be fed. Sign up at http://keepdurhambeautiful.org/programs/oakwoodpark.

Please join this community effort: you will be fed, you will have fun and the 600 children living within walking distance of Oakwood Park will have a playground!
