United Methodist churches in Durham, Chapel Hill and throughout the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church will ring bells, if they have them, at 3 p.m. Wednesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

N.C. UMC Conference Bishop Hope Morgan Ward sent a message to conference churches on Tuesday asking them to ring their bells “50 times as we celebrate our common commitment to peace and justice for all.”

She also called for clergy to speak of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream during gatherings throughout the day; and in their prayers, “let us repent of any restraints of the dream and pray for the dream to be fulfilled. In our witness, let us embody the
dream.”
On Aug. 28, 1963, hundreds of thousands of people came to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and listened to King deliver his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
