United Parcel Service Inc.’s new health care-focused distribution warehouse in Durham, which was unveiled to the public in a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, was built as bioMérieux Inc. needed a warehouse close to its Durham County site.

BioMérieux is a subsidiary of a France,-based diagnostics company. A provider of diagnostic instruments, software and other products used to determine the source of disease or contamination, the company has its U.S. corporate headquarters in the county.

In an email, Philippe Brower, bioMérieux’s supply chain director, said the company needed to use a warehouse nearby because its automated microbial detection systems, called BacT/ALERT, are heavy.

“Additionally, we saw this as an opportunity to transfer our material storage there, allowing us to free up space on our manufacturing floor,” he said in the email. “With all other bioMérieux warehouses at capacity, this decision allows us to support future growth while leveraging the logistical expertise of UPS.”

The facility is the 42nd in UPS’ global healthcare network. It’s designed specifically to serve health care businesses, with features such as temperature controls to allow for pharmaceuticals storage.
