O2 Fitness acquires three clubs

RALEIGH – The fitness company O2 Fitness has acquired Kinetix health clubs in Chapel Hill and Carrboro as well as Carolina Health Club in Wake Forest, according to a news release. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

The company took over the former Kinetix clubs at 257 S. Elliott Road in Chapel Hill and at 503 W. Main Street in Carrboro June 1.

It plans to honor existing Kinetix contracts. Kinetix members will automatically be considered members of their respective O2 Fitness club. Members can upgrade to an all-club membership for a fee.

The company plans improvements to the two clubs, including a women’s only area in the Chapel Hill location and a new cycle studio in the Carrboro club.

The company has 12 locations including one in Wilmington that opened earlier this year.

House budget proposal sustains biotech center funding

DURHAM – The N.C. Biotechnology Center fares better in the state House’s proposed budget, holding the center’s state allocation at $17.2 million.

The Research Triangle Park-based nonprofit promotes biotechnology research and business in the state.

The center’s state appropriation in the current fiscal year is about $17.2 million. The governor proposed an allocation of $7.2 million in each of the upcoming two fiscal years, while the Senate version proposed an allocation of $8.6 million.

Durham entrepreneurship workshop planned

DURHAM – A workshop focused on entrepreneurship is slated June 20 as part of the Professional Placement Network Academy’s series of interactive workshops for job seekers.

The academy’s workshops are the third Thursday of each month. The academy is designed for mid-to-upper level professionals who have earned at least $30,000 a year or have received higher education credentials or professional certifications.

Other workshops later this year will be on topics such as how to formulate a financial plan in today’s economy.

The entrepreneurship-focused event will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 20 at Hilton Durham at 3800 Hillsborough Road.
