The History of Kings Red & White

The late William Brinkley Sr. opened the doors of Kings Red and White back in October of 1956. His goal was to provide quality meats and fresh produce to the local residents of the greater Durham area. Over fifty years and three generations later his mission is still being carried out. King’s (which is operated now by his wife Oprah King and their two sons Brink King Jr. and Ronnie King), is still serving the customers and local patrons of not only Durham, but all up and down the East Coast.

Through the years the store has stood the test of time. With only minor remodeling in 1987 to update and expand the produce area as well as replacing the refrigerated cases, the store is almost just like it was fifty years ago.

What sets King’s apart from your larger chain stores is the customer service, and family atmosphere. The customers are the number one reason why King’s is still around, and they appreciate each and every customer that visits. It’s not just a trip to the grocery store, King’s is an experience. It’s a trip back in time, where the cashiers know your name, the milk is in glass bottles and the Butchers cut the meat the way you want it.

They offer the best cut of meats, and freshest produce from local farms. King’s specializes in bringing back the “good old days” with Old fashioned Candy, and hard to find canning and pickling items. Their selection of homemade and air dried sausages, pimento cheese, chicken salad, and old style hoop cheese will keep you coming back for more.

Kings utilizes a local approach by supporting local farms, and businesses. Maple View Farms, 9th Street Bakery, Counter Culture, Highland Brewing Company, Duck Rabbit Brewing Company, Rock of Ages Winery, and Duplin Wines are just some of the local vendors that King’s showcases. In a day where independent businesses are becoming a thing of the past and big corporate retailers are the new wave of the future, it’s nice to know that there are still places where you can go and feel like you’re a person and not just a number or statistic.
