Countdown to Kindergarten this Friday
Rising kindergartens have an event just for them with Friday’s Countdown to Kindergarten Welcome Fair.
From 5:45-8 p.m. at the Museum of Life and Science at 433 W. Murray Ave. in Durham rising kindergarteners and their parents are invited to this free event to ensure a smooth start to the 2013-14 school year.
Incoming Durham Public Schools’ kindergarteners are invited to tour the museum’s exhibits, ride a school bus, meet UNC-TV characters along with Dottie the Mouse, the DPS kindergarten mascot.
Sponsored by DPS, partnered with the Durham County Public Library, UNC-TV and Durham’s Partnership for Children, the event also allows parents to learn about the public school system and what they need to do to prepare, including learning about the school lunch program, the opportunity to complete lunch, bus and other applications with on-site assistance, the chance to check out the DPS before- and after-school care programs and get school calendars.
Participants can also sign up for a library card and learn about available free resources.
Children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 to be eligible to attend kindergarten. More information on DPS kindergarten can be found at www.dpsnc.net/kindergarten.
The first day of school for DPS students on a traditional calendar is Aug. 26.
