2013 SPRING PREVIEW: Folk-rock pioneer McGuinn to perform at ArtsCenter series
Roger McGuinn, who helped create the folk-rock tradition as co-founder of The Byrds, will perform May 3 at The ArtsCenter. McGuinn is one of the artists who will be featured in the venue’s 10th annual American Roots Series.
Before The Byrds, McGuinn already had a reputation in traditional folk music, touring and recording with groups like the Limelighters and the Chad Mitchell Trio. In 1973, after The Byrds disbanded, McGuinn began a solo career. In 1995, he started recording, for preservation, some of his favorite traditional folk tunes in a project called the Folk Den Project. In 2005, he released a compilation of some of those tunes on CD.
The American Roots Series kicks off today with Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys. Stanley and his brother Carter formed only the second bluegrass band in history in 1946. Ralph Stanley has continued the Clinch Mountain Boys since Carter Stanley died in December 1966. Many listeners know Stanley for his contribution of the song “O Death” to the soundtrack of the movie, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
Karla Bonoff, who got her start in the late 1960s at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, will perform March 2. Her catalog of songs includes “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me,” “Isn’t It Always Love,” and “Tell Me Why.”
Three performers – Suzanne Vega, Judy Collins and Roger McGuinn – are part of The ArtsCenter's new Meet The Artist Series. Patrons have access to VIP reserved seats with a meet and greet, or a songwriters master class.
Tickets for all American Roots Series concerts, including a full season pass (20 percent discount) or Pick 5 package (10 percent discount), are available at www.artscenterlive.org or at 919-929-2787.
