Student of the Month: A future firefighter keeps them laughing
A student who loves making people laugh wants a future saving their lives.
Quinton Bass, 18, is a senior at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability – the recently rebranded Durham Public Schools high school formerly known as Southern High.
After he graduates and before he pursues a degree at East Carolina University, Bass wants to be a firefighter.
“I like helping people,” he said. “I’m not worried about the danger.”
He likes joking with classmates in the halls.
“I’m not a boring person,” Bass said. “I keep people laughing.”
In his spare time, the Rougemont resident raises horses and rides all-terrain vehicles. He played outside linebacker on the Spartans football team.
“I love being on the field and playing hard,” Bass said.
He said his Student of the Month nomination came as a shock.
“I was surprised,” he said. “I really didn’t know what to think.”
He was nominated by Nick Rotosky, director of Southern’s School of Infrastructure Engineering.
“Quinton Bass is a very polite and mature young man,” Rotosky said. “He takes his academics seriously and he is also a great athlete. Quinton is always very positive and he makes people around him better.”
For Bass, earning a diploma always has been the prize he has eyed through his years in school.
“That was the purpose, to graduate,” he said. “You make good grades and graduate, that can take you a long way.”
His advice for other students: “Be the best you can be and always do the right thing.”
