Githens seeks speakers for African American Read-In event
Githens Middle School needs help reaching its goal of having a guest speaker in each classroom during its second annual African American Read-In on Feb. 19 from noon to 2:30 p.m.
The topic this year will be the Civil Rights Era in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. 
The organizers want speakers to read a book, poem, or passage, which focuses on people, places, or events involving the Civil Rights Era, however, any piece of African-American literature is welcome.

‘Kindergarten Welcome Night’ slated for Wednesday
The “Kindergarten Welcome Night” that was canceled due to inclement weather on Jan. 28 has been rescheduled for Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Durham Public Schools Staff Development Center at 2107 Hillandale Road.
Child care for children ages 4-12 will be provided.

Juniors urged to attend Saturday Academy
High school juniors attending Durham Public Schools are encouraged to attend Saturday Academy at Durham School of the Arts on Feb. 15, 22 and March 1 from 9 a.m. to noon to prepare for the ACT March 4.
Each instructor will have about 15 to 20 students in a class.
There will be five teachers per tested subject area. The areas include English, writing, reading, comprehension, mathematics and science reasoning.

Makeup days set
Durham Public Schools has set makeup days to replace those students missed last month because of snow.
Students on both traditional and year-round calendars will makeup the Jan. 29 school day on Feb. 17.
But students on the year-round school calendar will makeup Jan. 30 on Feb. 14.
Meanwhile, students on the traditional school calendar will make up Jan. 30 on March 28.
In the event more inclement weather forces schools to close this academic year, year-round schools have five inclement weather days available – Mach 31 and April 1-4.
Traditional calendar schools have two days remaining – April 14-15.

Tickets still available for ‘Evening of Entertainment’
Tickets are on sale for “An Evening of Entertainment,” the DPS Scholarship Foundation and DPS annual fundraiser and musical workshop to showcase student talent and to raise money for scholarships.
The event will be held March 1 at 7 p.m., at the Durham Performance Art Center downtown.
Performances will feature choral students from Durham Public Schools performing a wide genre of music.
