Student of the month: Kurtz values independence, helping peers

Robby Kurtz has loved science for as long as he can remember so it’s not too much of a surprise that he wants to go into mechanical engineering after college.

“I love exploring the fundamentals of stuff and how things work,” Kurtz said.
While he is considering several colleges including Virginia Tech, Kurtz is enjoying his time at Middle College High School, particularly the independence it provides.
“I like how it’s pretty much independence,” he said. “Students have control over everything. You have to schedule all of your classes. It’s the freedom of it. The staff is top notch, the students all work hard and are great people and the principal is always around and willing to talk to students.”
Kurtz is even helping some of his peers be the best that they can be by helping to keep their appetites under control once a week.
Kurtz and his family pickup bread that Panera Bread donates to non-profit organizations and take it to area schools, including his younger brother’s school.
“On Fridays we bring in bread for Spirit Group, for anyone doing college applications studying for the SAT or meeting with the guidance counselor,” Kurtz explained. “We did this at my old school. Panera donates bread so we distribute it to three schools, well four schools.”
Even with his strong ties to his high school, Kurtz is looking forward to the next step and ready to examine the possibilities.
“I’m looking forward to learning all that I can and figuring our how things work and what I want to do in the future.”
