- Dr. Sallie Permar with Duke School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and Tamlin Pavelsky of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Geological Sciences have been named recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Permar and Pavelsky were two out of 102 researchers honored by President Obama.
- Steffani Shouse of Durham made the fall 2013 dean’s list at High Point University.
- Local students graduated from UNC-Asheville in December. From Durham: Amanda Mae Eshelman and Jeremiah Ginn Jones. From Chapel Hill: Madeleine Roper Baringtang, Hannah Dysart Clark, Peter Joseph Doyle, Jefferson Ellis Dunn, Brynn Caroline Eaton, Shayne Thomas McKinley II and Loyd Moreland Trimmer III.

Wednesday: Classes begin for UNC-Chapel Hill students.
Thursday: Duke’s regular class schedule begins.
Friday: N.C. Central University’s first day of spring semester classes.
