Southern School of Engineering junior Xavier Smith exudes positivity, and folks have noticed.

Smith has become a leader, giving back to his community through cleaning lawns, picking up trash wherever he sees it, helping those in need and sharing with peers the importance of staying positive and giving back.

And he always greets his teachers with a warm, “Good morning.”

“He’s just the kind of individual teachers love to have,” said Spanish teacher Minnie Harrington, who nominated Smith for Student of the Month honors. “Xavier has those skills. He’s dedicated, he’s focused and he wants to make people feel good.”

Being a positive person is something at which Smith works.

“I am an outgoing person,” Smith said. “I like to be a leader and I like to hang around positive people.”

In addition to being a good person, Smith is a good student, sporting a 3.4 GPA, but acknowledges it should be higher.

After graduating next year, Smith plans to take his academic and people skills to either N.C. State University or N.C. A&T University, where he plans to major in civil or computer engineering and minor in sports marketing or business administration.

“N.C. State is one of the stop schools for engineering and so is N.C. A&T,” Smith said. “I would like to stay in state, so I’ve also thought about UNC Greensboro and UNC Charlotte as options as well.”

Though Smith plans to study engineering, he readily admits that his favorite course is history.

“I like history because I like to learn about my history and the culture that we were raised in,” Smith said.

Smith is proud that he has a part-time job at Wendy’s, where he earns spending money and money to  save for college.

In his spare time, Smith likes to work in computers, spend time with family and play basketball.

He’s also got the golf bug and is a member of the school’s golf team.
