School holds annual auction
CHAPEL HILL -- St. Thomas More Catholic School in Chapel Hill will hold its annual gala and auction on March 1in the Friends and Family Hall of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St., Chapel Hill.
This year's gala and auction, “The Starry Knight Gala,” will feature cuisine from Gary Wein, executive chef and co-owner of Savory Fare and also Chef John Akhile of Shiki Sushi.

All proceeds benefit St. Thomas More Catholic School and the enrichment of its educational and cultural programs.

Compete in ‘Knockout’ tournament
The National Number Knockout is calling for students to participate in a national math competition for students 14 and under.  
The competition is designed to encourage the improvement of calculating speed and math accuracy in young students. 
Contenders must submit a 90-second scouting video to info@nationalnumberknockout by Thursday.
National Number Knockout, or N2K, is played using a board with the numbers 1-36 and three dice. The dice are rolled and all three numbers are used in each round to develop an equation. The answer to the equation is used to eliminate, or knock out, numbers from the game board.
The top 32 players will compete March 28 in Orlando, Fla.
The 32 finalists and accompanying adults will have their expenses paid to the National Number Knockout where they will compete for the $10,000 prize.

Movie screening rescheduled
DURHAM -- Due to last week’s inclement weather, the screening of “American Promise,” at Durham Academy has been postponed until March 20 at 6:30 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium, 3601 Ridge Road.
Admission is free and open to the public
The movie was originally scheduled to be screened at the school on Thursday.
The documentary follows two African-American families from their sons' first day of kindergarten at The Dalton School, an independent school in New York City, through high school graduation.

Juniors urged to attend Saturday Academy
DURHAM -- High school juniors attending Durham Public Schools are encouraged to attend Saturday Academy at Durham School of the Arts this Saturday and March 1 from 9 a.m. to noon to prepare for the ACT on March 4.
Each instructor will have about 15 to 20 students in a class.
There will be five teachers per tested subject area, which include English, writing, reading, comprehension, mathematics and science reasoning.

DURHAM -- Research Triangle Charter Academy is holding an enrollment information meeting Thursday beginning at 6 p.m.
Parents can learn more about the school’s culture, curriculum, and academic results from Principal Devon Carson.
School tours will also be available.
Research Triangle Charter Academy is a tuition-free public charter school, managed by National Heritage Academies.
It serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

SCRABBLE tournament
CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina students in fourth through eighth grades are invited to compete in the N.C. SCRABBLE Championship March 8 at Seawell Elementary School in Chapel Hill.
The tournament consists of five games. Each game is about 50 minutes in length and each team will play in all five games.
Participants must play as a member of a two-person team. Mixed-grade teams are allowed.
The tournament entry fee is $10 per person.
Snacks and a pizza lunch will be provided and prizes and/or trophies will be awarded.

Tickets available for ‘Evening of Entertainment’
Tickets are on sale for “An Evening of Entertainment,” the DPS Scholarship Foundation and DPS annual fundraiser and musical workshop to showcase student talent and to raise money for scholarships.
The event will be March 1 at 7 p.m., at the Durham Performance Art Center.
Performances will feature choral students from Durham Public Schools performing a wide genre of music.
