Durham represented well by 9 and 10-year olds
All-Stars from Durham continued to shine in a rainy and wet week in Wilson. Both Bull City and South Durham had to fight through the weather to battle for the two spots in the district finals next weekend in Wilson. The two teams fought to the brink of elimination.
Both little leagues battled with one another on several different occasions. The two leagues each brought two teams to play for the finals. Bull City and South Durham each did its fair share of beating up the other teams’ pitchers.
When last I talked about the all-star teams from Durham they were all thriving. South Durham’s Orange team had lost in its opening game to Bull City’s Red team 11-1 in the first game of the tournament. They were then forced into an elimination game with West Fayetteville. Despite the valiant efforts of the team, they lost a very close 10-7 game to become the first Durham team eliminated.
Bull City’s White team played its first game against South Durham’s Green team in the second game of the tournament last weekend. They would lose that game by the score of 7-2. After the loss, the team played in an elimination game that started last Sunday night. The game was stopped midway due to rain, but was eventually continued days later and they went on to win 20-0. Still facing the brink of elimination, they met with the same South Durham team that put them in the bottom of the bracket. They lost 23-14 in a game they led by one after three innings. They were then sent home with the loss.
Speaking of the South Durham Green team, they had a fantastic journey towards the finals. In between their two wins over Bull City, they lost the closest game of the tournament losing to eventual section winner Wilson 2-0. Following the second win over Bull City, they picked up wins over Roxboro and Clayton. That led them into a final game against the remaining Bull City team for a shot at the district finals.
The last team from Durham is Bull City’s Red team. They opened with wins over South Durham and Clayton. They then went in against Wilson, a team that has caused trouble against Bull City. Though the game was in their reach the entire time, Bull City fell 5-3. That forced them into an elimination game against the Green team of South Durham with the finals on the line. After attacking early and often, Bull City came out victorious with an 8-2 victory.
From here Bull City Red will play in the district finals next weekend along with Wilson and two more District Six teams that played at a different location. Each location had a team finish undefeated and one team with one loss. The undefeated team will play one another, and the one loss teams will play. The loser of the one loss game goes home, while the winner plays the loser of the undefeated game.
So, congratulations to all of the teams that took part in the all-star tournament over the last week. Good luck to Bull City in their quest for the state tournament, and congratulations to South Durham for their amazing enthusiasm and effort.
