Oktoberfest at West 94th St. Pub to benefit food bank

West 94th St. Pub will celebrate Oktoberfest with music, German food and beer as well as benefiting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.
The Pub at 4711 Hope Valley Road in southwest Durham will host Oktoberfest from 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 2.
Manager Kerry Bryant said this is their first large outdoor Oktoberfest event. Oktoberfest is an annual fall festival held in the Bavarian region of Germany. In July, 94th St. Pub held a grill-off to benefit the Food Bank and wanted to hold another event to gather food bank donations. The Food Bank provides food to people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in the state.
What Bryant likes about Oktoberfest is “the food itself and also gathering people together -- especially when we can help people at the holidays,” she said, now that the federal government shutdown is over.
“Everybody seems to like food and beer,” Bryant said.

Bryant’s mother, Sarah Bonner, owns the West 94th St. Pub and its name originates with the founding year – 1994. Oktoberfest will feature beer samples from local breweries from 2 to 4 p.m., with live music from The Bright Mines from 3 to 6 p.m. Beer samples come from Lonerider Brewery in Raleigh, White Street Brewing Company in Wake Forest, Triangle Brewing Company in Durham and Foothills Brewing in Winston-Salem. German food offered will include pretzels with German mustard, kielbasa and bratwurst, German potato salad, apple strudel and sausage and sauerkraut fritters. Children will decorate a gingerbread house with candy. Food and beer stations will be set up outside, and customers may bring lawn chairs.
Tickets are $5 per sample station or $15 to sample all stations. Those who bring five canned food items to donate may sample all stations for $10. The event is family-friendly, with games for children and an eating contest – probably corn on the cob, Bryant said. There will also be raffle prizes, with money going to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.
