Jehovah’s Witnesses district convention next two weekends
RALEIGH -- The District Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which includes about 1,200 delegates from Durham and Chapel Hill, will be held this weekend and Aug. 9-11 at PNC Arena, 1400 Edwards Mill Road in Raleigh.
The convention theme is “God’s Word Is Truth!” based on John 17:17. It will be held from 9:20 a.m. to 4:55 p.m. Aug. 2, 3, 9 and 10, and from 9:20 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. Aug. 3 and Aug. 10. Events each weekend include a talk, “What Is Truth?” and dramatic plays to bring Bible stories and lessons to life.

Mighty Royallettes celebration this weekend at True Way Holy Church
DURHAM -- The 49th Anniversary of The Mighty Royallettes will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and at 4 p.m. Sunday at True Way Holy Church, 4124 Fayetteville St. Elder Nina Jones is the overseer. The celebration will also feature Tony and the Magnificent Voices of Durham, The Wade Sisters of Goldsboro, The Discipleaires of Danville, Va., Joyce Miles Distant Journey of Raleigh, The New Voices of Faith of Mocksville, the Rev. Reunion choir to record live at St. Mark AME Zion on Aug. 18

Efland UMC youth elected president at UMC youth session
EFLAND -- Chadwich Cecil from Efland United Methodist Church was elected president at the Annual Conference Session for Youth of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, held this month at Methodist University in Fayetteville. He is a rising senior at Orange High School.
National Night Out at Russell Memorial CME
DURHAM -- Russell Memorial CME Church, 703 S. Alston Ave., will be hosting National Night Out in conjunction with its Annual Back to School event at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
During National Night Out, Russell Memorial will provide the community with food and information about community leaders. The congregation will also be distributing back packs with supplies for children returning to school.

Car show and fish fry at Mt. Zion A.M.E. on Saturday

Kingsolver book discussed Sunday
DURHAM – Barbara Kingsolver’s “Flight Behavior: A Novel” will be discussed for the Summer Book Reading Series at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in Watts-Hill Hall at the church, 305 E. Main St.
Will McDow will lead discussion of Kingsolver’s book about a young mother on a farm in Tennessee who makes a discovery and opens up environmental, economic and political issues in her small town. White Rock Baptist prayer events, tea
DURHAM – White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville St. will host a Prayer Workshop: Barriers to Experiencing God through Prayer at 7 p.m. Aug. 14.
It will focus on what keeps you from having a lifestyle of prayer and how to overcome what hinders you from praying.
The church’s Rainbow Tea will be held Aug. 24. The theme is “Women of Charm and Grace.” Tickets are $20. White Rock will also hold its 13th annual Prayer Retreat in the mountains at the Ridgecrest Conference Center Sept. 13-14. Registration deadline is Aug. 11.
