VBS for all ages at Mt. Bright Baptist

HILLSBOROUGH -- Mt. Bright Baptist Church, 211 W. Union St., will hold Vacation Bible School from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday through June 21. The theme is “Fishing on a Mission.” Classes will be held for all ages. Crafts and recreation activities.

The week will end with a picnic at from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 22 at Hargraves Community Center in Chapel Hill.

Community Day June 22 at Life International

DURHAM -- Life International will present Community Day from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 22 at the church, 4823 Meadow Drive.

Activities include a yard sale, fire engine, Kids’ Zone with inflatable games, health screenings, mini-talks, a fish fry and vendors. The event is free and open to all.

Efland pastor recognized at AME conference

RALEIGH -- The 120th Annual Session of the Western North Carolina Conference of the 2nd District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was held May 22–24 in Raleigh. The theme was “Effective Christian Leadership.”

Bishop William P. DeVeaux Sr., presiding prelate of the 2nd Episcopal District, officiated. The Rev. Barbara J. Barbour, former pastor of White Cross AME Church in Efland, was one of four ministers who received superannuated (retired) status during the conference.

Dental care information at Community Baptist

DURHAM -- Community Baptist Church, 4821 Barbee Road, will host a Dental Care Information Session at 11 a.m. June 22. Guest presenter will be Desiree T. Palmer, a Triangle dentist for 20 years who volunteers in the Durham community.

Father’s Day at Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion

Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, 360 Burgess Road, Apex, will celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday with guest speaker the Rev. Cecil Wilson of Harris Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Siler City.

‘Stand Up for Justice’ event at UCCH

CHAPEL HILL -- Mel Underbakke, director of the education and outreach committee of the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms, will speak at a “Stand Up for Justice” event June 30 at United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Laila Yaghi and Nahla Al-Arian will also speak about the treatment of family members. Underbakke will speak at 10 a.m. at the Adult Forum between the worship services, and then host a town hall on civil freedoms from 2-4 p.m. in the fellowship hall. For information, visit www.civilfreedoms.org.

Oklahoma professor to speak at First Presbyterian

DURHAM -- The Rev. Charles Kimball, a professor and director of religious studies at the University of Oklahoma, will speak Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St.

Kimball will lead the Summer Book Discussion Series at 9:45 a.m. in Watts-Hill Hall based on his newest book, “When Religion Becomes Lethal,” and preach during the 11 a.m. worship service. His sermon, “When Bad Things Happen,” will be based on the tornadoes in Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

‘Colossal Coaster’ VBS at Olive Branch Baptist

DURHAM – Olive Branch Baptist Church, 123 Olive Branch Road, will hold Vacation Bible School from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday through June 20. The theme is “Colossal Coaster World.”

The church’s Vacation Bible School is open to 3-year-olds through sixth-graders.

VBS, joint service at Lipscomb Grove Missionary Baptist

HILLSBOROUGH -- Lipscomb Grove Missionary Baptist Church and Cain’s Chapel Baptist Church will fellowship at 9:45 a.m. Sunday with a joint service at 800 Lipscomb Grove Church Road.

Also, Lipscomb Grove will hold its annual Vacation Bible School at 6 p.m. Monday through June 21.

The church will celebrate Women’s Fellowship Weekend from 8:30-11 a.m. June 29 with a Breakfast & Workshop. The Women’s Day worship service at 10:30 a.m. June 30 will include guest speaker the Rev. Ester Ross, a pastor in Virginia.

‘Godspell’ at University UMC

CHAPEL HILL -- About 50 members of the University United Methodist Church Youth Choir will give a free performance of the musical “Godspell” at 7:30 p.m. June 19 at UUMC, 150 E. Franklin St. The performance is free. Ice cream will be served at intermission. The youth also performed “Godspell” this month on a trip to California. Will Van Deventer plays the role of Jesus.

Men’s/Father’s Day service at St. John’s Missionary Baptist
