Ice menorah/turkey and fire show for Hanukkah
CHAPEL HILL – Chabad of Durham-Chapel Hill will present “Chanukah on Fire” at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 4 on the UNC Chapel Hill campus at the Pit, 220 E. Cameron Ave. There will be a fire show and “Menurkey” ice menorah.

Remembrance service Sunday at Union Baptist
DURHAM -- Ellis D. Jones & Sons funeral directors and Union Baptist Church Ministry of Congregational Care and Counseling will present the 21st Annual In Loving Memory Candlelight Remembrance Service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Union Baptist Church, 904 N. Roxboro St.
The service will be a time of sharing, healing and to celebrate the life of loved ones. The community is invited to participate by presenting a tribute, poem or memory of their loved one. Santa at Temple Baptist on Sunday
DURHAM -- Temple Baptist Church, 4504 Sterling Drive, will host Santa Claus from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Santa will be waiting to hear from all children and adults about their Christmas lists and wishes. Advent services at Parkwood UMC
DURHAM -- Parkwood United Methodist Church, 5123 Revere Road, has a busy Advent of events beginning Sunday. All Sunday services begin at 11 a.m. The Hanging of the Greens ceremony Sunday includes lighting the altar and Advent candles, placing greenery, poinsettias and the Nativity along with an explanation of the Chrismon tree. On Dec. 8, Parkwood UMC will hold its Moravian Love Feast service of song and simple meal of buns and coffee. On Dec. 15, the choir will perform a cantata. On Dec. 22, the worship service will be a Festival of Lessons and Carols with congregation participation.
The Christmas Eve celebration will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 24, ending with a candlelight communion service.

AIDS quilt panels, events at ERUUF
DURHAM – World AIDS Day is Sunday. The NAMES Project Foundation of Atlanta, which began creating the AIDS Memorial Quilt in 1987, is loaning Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship two large quilt sections featuring 16 panels. They will hang in the sanctuary at 4907 Garrett Road, Sunday through Dec. 7.
Related events include Dr. Ross McKinney, who did some of the early pediatric AIDS research at Duke, presenting testimonials about the quilt at the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services Sunday.
The film “Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt” will be shown in the sanctuary from 7-9 p.m. Dec. 4, with introduction by Dr. David Sokal. The event is free. The panels will be on display in the ERUUF sanctuary 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Dec. 2, 3, 5 and 6; noon-4 p.m. Dec. 4; and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 7. For information, visit

Spaghetti benefit at Greater Orange Grove Baptist
DURHAM – Greater Orange Grove Baptist Church, 5524 N. Roxboro Road, will hold a charity benefit to help children in the Durham community at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Holiday and Craft Bazaar Dec. 14 at Triangle Presbyterian
DURHAM -- Triangle Presbyterian Preschool & Kindergarten will host a Holiday and Craft Bazaar from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 14 at Triangle Presbyterian Church, 5001 Tudor Place. More than 40 vendors of homemade crafts and home-based businesses will be on hand. Funds raised will support the scholarship fund. 

Advent series at First Presbyterian

DURHAM – First Presbyterian Church will hold a four-week discussion on the Messianic texts from the prophets, led by Jonathan Nelson, starting Sunday. The discussions will be held at 9:45 a.m. Sundays in Watts-Hill Hall at the church, 305 E. Main St. The topics are Advent Hope, Advent Peace, Advent Joy and Advent Love.

Nelson received his master of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, is pursuing his master of theology at Duke Divinity School and is a candidate for ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA). This Sunday’s worship service at 11 a.m. will feature Interim Pastor Mark E.
