World Overcomers ranked 16th fastest growing church by magazine
World Overcomers Christian Church in Durham has been ranked 16th fastest growing church in the U.S. by Outreach magazine. The magazine’s annual list of top 100 churches, released Sunday, was determined after 27,000 evangelical Protestant churches were contacted by LifeWay Research to self-report data. Outreach is based in Carlsbad, Calif., and is aimed at “outreach-oriented, Bible-based churches.”
Two more Durham-based churches were also on the list. Newhope Church was ranked 26th fastest growing, and the Summit Church ranked 96th. Other North Carolina churches on the fastest growing list include First Baptist Church in Jacksonville at 14, Elevation Church in Matthews at 15, Hickory First in Hickory at 60, and World Tabernacle Church in Rocky Mount at 67. Elevation Church is also on Outreach’s list of largest churches at 28, with more than 32,000 members. World Overcomers comes in at 46 with 10,000 members, and the Summit at 84 with 6,600 members. Biltmore Baptist Church in Arden is ranked at 99 with just over 6,000 members. Nationwide, Outreach ranked Triumph Church in Detroit as the fastest growing church, and Lakewood Church in Houston, led by Joel Osteen, as the largest.
Pastor Andy Thompson, founder of World Overcomers, said in a church press release that they “are intentional about giving everyone a worship experience that is uplifting, inspiring and life-changing.” World Overcomers live streams services and has a college-focused ministry called OvercomersU. In 2011, the church expanded its 30,000-square-foot space off Alexander Drive to 140,000 square feet.
“Our facility is non-traditional, we’re in a warehouse, but it gave us a blank canvas to develop a church that felt open, contemporary, and comfortable. We’re able to create an experience that traditional church buildings can’t replicate,” COO James Bennett said in the release.
