Evening prayer being held downtown
DURHAM -- The Beloved Community, a group of members, neighbors and friends of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Urban Ministries of Durham, First Presbyterian Church and El Buen Pastor -- all in downtown Durham – will hold evening prayer on Wednesdays starting June 11 and continuing through July.
Prayer services will include bilingual song, prayer and reflection from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. in the St. Philip’s Community Garden at the corner of Main and North Dillard streets. All are welcome to attend. For information, call St. Philip’s at 919-682-5708.

Bishop to preside at Mass for VBS kickoff
DURHAM -- The Saint Matthew Catholic Church’s Vacation Bible School program to be held June 22-26 will have a kickoff event with the celebration of the 11 a.m. Sunday Mass June 22, presided by the Most Rev. Michael Burbidge, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. Lunch will be served. The VBS theme this year is “Weird Animals” in the Bible.

Building fund service Sunday at True Way Holy Church
DURHAM -- A Building Fund service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at True Way Holy Church, 4124 Fayetteville St. Guest preacher will be the Rev. Ollie Ellison of Vernon Hill Baptist Church in Oxford and Baptist Grove Church in Bullock. Ellison will be accompanied by choirs and congregations from both churches. Youth Day at Mt. Zoar Missionary Baptist
DURHAM – Mt. Zoar Missionary Baptist Church will observe Youth Day at 11 a.m. June 8 at the church, 2400 Cheek Road. All youth and 2014 graduates will be honored. The special guest will be Minister Jadon K. Yellock, age 12, from Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Mebane. The public is invited.

VBS at Christus Victor Lutheran June 15-19
DURHAM -- Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 1615 NC Highway 54, will hold Vacation Bible School June 15-19. VBS will be held nightly from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for children ages 4 through rising eighth-graders. The curriculum is “Kingdom Chronicles,” and will include Bible stories, games and crafts. Men’s Day at Cain’s Chapel to honor Stanback
HILLSBOROUGH -- The Men’s Ministry of Cain’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 2001 St. Mary's Road, will celebrate Men’s Day at the 11 a.m. worship service June 15. Guest speaker will be Larry Spriull, professor of history and theology at Morehouse College in Atlanta.
The Men’s Ministry will also give its Distinguish Citizen Award to Durham District Attorney Leon Stanback. Special guests will be the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge of Red Mountain in Rougemont.

All ages VBS at Community Baptist June 9-13
DURHAM -- Community Baptist Church, 4821 Barbee Road, Durham, will hold Vacation Bible School from 6 to 8 p.m. June 9-13. VBS will include arts and crafts, music and spiritual study on the theme, “God, Our Father, Ordering Our Lives.” Sessions end with snacks, and on June 12, a movie related to the lessons. Appreciation service for Farrar on Saturday
CHATHAM COUNTY -- An appreciation service for the Rev. Calvin T. Farrar will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, 360 Burgess Road, Apex.
Farrar is the Durham district retired pastor. The public is invited. The Rev. Orlando R. Dowdy is host pastor.

Food donations needed at Walltown food bank
DURHAM – Walltown Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank donations are low. The food bank needs food and gift card donations.
It serves 70 families monthly as well as emergency cases. There are 30 to 40 families on a waiting list. Food donations may be dropped off at any time.

Food festival at Levin JCC on Sunday
DURHAM -- The Levin Jewish Community Center will host a Jewish Food Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the JCC, 1937 W. Cornwallis Road.
