“Out of the Box” will screen as part of a block of short films Saturday at 10:50 a.m., Tuesday at 9:10 p.m., and Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. All screenings are in Cinema One, Carolina Theatre.

Lilly Porter (played by Dominique Storni) and her family – Brittani (played by Brandi Lynn Anderson), Bodie (Billy Holden), Tiffani (Carleigh King) – move to Utah and set up a coffee shop that caters to gay clientele. Brittani is a doctoral candidate at the university who has made a friend in Sister Halbeck, a Mormon (Jill Adler). Lilly makes cupcakes that are legendary. Her mom, Lilly and brother Bodie are both gay. When Sister Halbeck takes a welcoming gift to the Porters, they reciprocate with some cupcakes, which draws her to the coffee shop to buy more (in disguise). A dinner ensues in which these two different world views try to understand each other. In the end, it’s all about the frosting in this short film by J.A. Steel.
