Special Merge, Yep Roc releases available Saturday for Record Store Day
Special limited releases from Merge Records of Durham and Yep Roc Records of Hillsborough will be available Saturday for the sixth annual Record Store Day.
Merge Records has two vinyl releases to mark the occasion. A 7-inch vinyl release of two new Superchunk songs, “Void” backed with “Faith,” will be released exclusively in record stores. This release features hand-numbered sleeves printed at Barefoot Press, the original printer of Merge’s 7-inch sleeves, and is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide. Merge also will release Destroyer’s 2002 debut “This Night” double-LP for the first time on vinyl in the United States. “This Night” will be limited to 2,000 copies worldwide.
Yep Roc will offer limited-edition vinyl for artists Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchcock, Josh Rouse and Tift Merritt. In addition, it will release a 12-inch single and DVD of the historic Yep Roc 15 recording session featuring nearly every act on the label from its 15-year anniversary music festival.
At the YR15 festival in October 2012, veteran musicians and producers Chris Stamey and Scott McCaughey recorded more than 20 acts in between sound checks, in hallways and in “pop up” recording studios during the four-night festival. The DVD documents the full recording session and features performances by John Wesley Harding, Josh Rouse, Mark Simonsen from The Old Ceremony, and Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood from Fountains of Wayne.
Offbeat Music in Brightleaf Square in Durham will have hundreds of limited edition LPs, EPs, and 45 rpm records for sale on that day while titles last. Store owner Patrick McKenna said that if past years are an indication, it pays to arrive early. Previous years saw lengthy lines of buyers waiting for the opening of the store at 10 a.m., when the doors will open Saturday. Offbeat will have titles from the Grateful Dead, R.E.M., David Bowie, the DB’s and many others.
A group of record store owners and employees started Record Store Day in 2007 to celebrate the joy of collecting and listening to music in an old-fashioned physical record store.
