World premieres, music and dance at Duke Performances

Jun. 18, 2014 @ 03:48 PM

The Campbell Brothers, a “sacred steel” ensemble, will mark the 50th anniversary of saxophonist John Coltrane’s recording “A Love Supreme” with a concert Sept. 5 at Hayti Heritage Center. The Campbell Brothers’ concert is among six world premieres that Duke Performances has commissioned for its 2014-2015 season.
The trio The Bad Plus return to Duke for an interpretation of saxophonist Ornette Coleman’s recording “Science Fiction” Oct. 18. The Bad Plus previously did an interpretation of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” which Duke commissioned.
Other world premieres will be a new work from Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company titled “The Subtle One,” to be performed Feb. 20 and 21. Pianist Jason Moran & the Bandwagon will perform the music for this dance. Guitarist William Tyler will perform “Corduroy Roads,” a new piece to accompany photos from the Civil War, Nov. 20. Violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman will perform new music for “Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait,” set to films that H. Lee Waters took of life in the Piedmont during the 1930s and ’40s. Composer Ari Picker of the band Lost in the Trees will perform music for “Lion and the Lamb,” inspired by poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Book of Hours.” This concert will take place March 27 and 28.
The Ciompi Quartet, Duke University’s string quartet in residence, will perform four concerts Sept. 20, Nov. 1, Feb. 7 and April 11. All Ciompi concerts are in Baldwin Auditorium.
