Free music returns to Bynum, Weaver Street, other venues

May. 01, 2014 @ 10:05 AM

The annual Bynum Front Porch Friday Night Music Series begins today when Steph Stewart and the Boyfriends play at 7 p.m. at Bynum General Store.

This four-piece string band from Chapel Hill fuses the music of Appalachia with Americana. The summer lineup also includes bluegrass, jazz, old time music, rhythm and blues, gospel, West African traditional music and other styles.
All the Friday Night Music Series performances run from 7 to 9 p.m. on the outdoor stage at the Bynum General Store, 950 Bynum Road. Although tickets are not required, a hat is passed and a $5 to $7 donation is encouraged to compensate the performers. Barney’s Famous Hot Dogs & Snacks and Little Dippers Italian Ice will be on site to provide cool drinks and tasty treats.
The music series began in 2001 to bring people to Bynum and help sustain the Bynum General Store and Post Office. Unable to make a profit, the general store’s operator eventually closed the business in 2006. The community later banded together and created the Bynum Front Porch organization, a nonprofit group that continues to produce the music series as well as other family-friendly events.
In addition to the music series, Bynum Front Porch still hosts the Bynum Front Porch Pickin’ the second and fourth Saturdays each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the store. These bluegrass sessions are open to musicians and singers of all ages and skill levels as well as to those who just want to enjoy the entertainment.
