Extra! Extra! The North American tour of the Broadway hit “Newsies” launches this fall, and Durham is on the list of tour cities. The Disney “Newsies” website announced Durham along with 23 other cities including Charlotte, where it will be performed at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in January 2015. The date for “Newsies” at DPAC has not yet been announced.
Charlotte’s 2014-15 Broadway season was announced earlier this week, which includes Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” “Motown the Musical” and “Kinky Boots,” which are all launching national tours along with “Newsies.”
“Newsies” won Tony Awards in 2012 for Best Score and Best Choreography. It is based on the 1992 film about newspaper boys during the 1899 newsboy strike in New York City and featuring a young Christian Bale. The Broadway musical features Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, LaVon Fisher-Wilson as Medda and Ben Fankhauser as Davey. The music is by the prolific and acclaimed composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast”) with lyrics by Jack Feldman. Harvey Fierstein wrote the book. Choreography is by Christopher Gattelli.
“Newsies” premiered on Broadway at the David T. Nederlander Theatre. The Durham Performing Arts Center is operated by Nederlander and PFM. Nederlander is a 102-year-old family-owned company that owns or operates 24 facilities around the world.
The remainder of the current Broadway tour season at DPAC is “Once” Jan. 21-26, “The Book of Mormon” Feb. 11-23, “Evita” March 11-16, “The Wizard of Oz” April 8-13, “American Idiot” April 29-30, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” May 13-18 and “Mamma Mia!” May 30-June 1.
DPAC usually announces its full upcoming season in February.
