Wailers, longtime favorites and newer ensembles this spring at ArtsCenter

Jan. 02, 2014 @ 01:16 PM

The ArtsCenter will begin its 40th year with a music series that includes a concert by reggae music pioneers The Wailers. Other musicians who will perform at the center are ArtsCenter favorites Robin and Linda Williams, and newer ensembles such as Hot Club of Cowtown and Gangstagrass.

The Wailers date back to the early 1960s, but the band most listeners know dates to 1969 and includes bass player Ashton “Family Man” Barrett and his brother Carlton on drums, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and the late lead vocalist and writer Bob Marley. Their now familiar songs – “One Love,” “Redemption Song,” “Get Up, Stand Up” – introduced an international audience to Caribbean music and its African and American influences. The Wailers will perform Jan. 19 during their 30th anniversary tour.
The ArtsCenter will begin extending its lowest ticket prices, The ArtsCenter Friends advance rate, to students and active duty military, said Art Menius, executive director. Those who purchase online should bring their IDs with them to the concert. This advance rate is not available the day of show.
Tickets and more information can be obtained from www.artscenterlive.org, The ArtsCenter Box Office at 919-929-2787 and at 300-G East Main St; Carrboro, and at  www.artscenterlive.org.
