Summer camp preview tonight

DURHAM – The Durham County chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina hosts a summer camp and programs fair for individuals with autism or other developmental disability tonight. About 20 organizations are expected to attend the event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Watts Street Baptist Church, 800 Watts St. For information, call Tiffane Land at 919-306-4497.

Area students win 2012-13 Siemens Awards

Amanda Lohmann, a senior at East Chapel Hill High School, and Tejas Sundaresa, a senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, were named the North Carolina state winners of the 2012-13 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. The awards recognize top achievers in advanced courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). One male and one female student in each state receives a $2,000 college scholarship. Two national winners then receive $5,000 scholarships.

Lohmann, who plans to study computational biology in college, has taken 10 AP courses to date. Sundaresa, who wants to study biological research and business, has taken 11 AP courses.

Ninth graders sought for Junior Leadership Durham

DURHAM – Junior Leadership Durham is recruiting ninth graders for its 2013-14 class who attend a Durham school, whether it is public, private, home or charter. The volunteer nonprofit’s program is free to participants. Application deadline is March 22. For an application, visit the website at

East Chapel Hill High choral concert on Saturday

CHAPEL HILL – Students from the choral department at East Chapel Hill High School will perform a short concert at University Baptist Church, corner of Franklin and Columbia streets, Saturday at 3 p.m. The concert is free, but a basket for donations will be available. Free parking is also available, using the Franklin Street entrance into the church lot. Audience members are asked to enter from the doors facing Columbia Street.

‘The Music Man’ trumpets into East Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL – The classic Meredith Willson musical “The Music Man” comes to East Chapel Hill High School’s MainStage on March 7-9, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are reserved seating, $8.50 in advance and $12 at the door.
