2008 North Carolina Primary Election
|
Tuesday provided much anticipated Democratic Primary races with national, state and local nominations on the line. Durham County's district attorney, Durham County Commissioners and School Board races were bolstered by the national attention of the Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama showdown for the Democratic Party Presidential nomination. Durham welcomed visits at polling sites from Lt. Gov. Beverly Pudue, a candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, and former President of the United States Bill Clinton.

Duke, a two seed in the tournament, was eliminated by West Virginia, a seven seed, in the second round of the 2008 Men's NCAA Division Basketball Tournament in a West Region game played in Washington, D.C. West Virginia won 73-67.

UNC Women Win 4th Consecutive ACC Hoops Title

North Carolina beat archrival Duke 86-73 to win their 4th consecutive ACC Women's Basketball Championship. The tournament was held at the Greensboro Coliseum. North Carolina's Erlana Larkins took the tournament MVP honors.

Eve Carson, 1985-2008
|
UNC Student Body President Eve Marie Carson was indentified as the victim of Wednesday's homicide in a residential neighborhood in Chapel Hill. The revelation of Carson's death was shocking. Thousands gathered on Polk Place less than three hours after the announcement to mourn the loss of one of Carolina's most beloved and active students. Carson died at age 22 of multiple gunshot wounds.

Students from Githens collected $1526.76 to give to the NC Children's Hospital through a dance marathon on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008. During the dance, students had to stand on their feet for six hours. They could dance, make crafts, play sports and video games, and make cards for the children at the hospital, during the event.

Wendy Rash, 36, is a flight nurse with UNC Air Care and Ground Transport Services at UNC Hospitals. Rash flies in the back of a helicopter to trauma scenes and other hospitals to transport patients to UNC Hospitals. Her helicopter unit is one of seven in North Carolina.

Powe first grade class, known as the Peace Class, are partaking in a service project called Change for Change, where the class is raising money to buy books for schools in Guatamala and the Genesis House. The students headed to The Regulator Bookshop on Thursday, May 31, 2007 to sell baked goods to raise money and peruse the store's shelves for bilingual books to buy with the funds raised.
