District 3 candidates outline platforms

With the May 6 school board election just days away, there doesn’t appear to be a clear favorite in the District 3 race.
The endorsements of Durham’s big political action committees have been spread just about evenly among the four candidates vying to replace Nancy Cox, who is not seeking re-election.
Deborah Bryson was endorsed by the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, Lisa Gordon Stella got the nod from the Friends of Durham and Matt Sears, the only candidate to receive multiple endorsements, won over the People’s Alliance, The Herald-Sun editorial board and the Durham Association of Educators.

District 2 candidates duke it out in a crowded field

The crowded and highly competitive District 2 school board race has provided much of the fireworks for an otherwise staid election season.
In recent weeks, the candidates have been vocal in their contention that the current school board should slow down the superintendent search process to allow the board seated in July to hire the next schools’ chief.
And candidate Donald Hughes has taken Sendolo Diaminah to task over his voting record, and Jimmy Doster, a Republican, over his party affiliation.

Choices for DA, sheriff

In the contests for Durham County sheriff and for district attorney, three Democrats are vying for the party’s nomination in each race.  Normally, we refrain from endorsements in primaries, preferring to weigh both major parties’ nominations in the context of the general election.
