Volunteer of the Week - Victor Engle
Volunteer Center of Durham
Duke HomeCare & Hospice
Volunteer for 4 years
Victor volunteers in patient-family support, seeing a patient and family through the difficult journey at the end of life. These volunteers receive extensive training and dedicate thousands of hours of their time to support families. As an ambassador at the Hock Family Inpatient Facility, Victor does a little bit of everything: answers the phone, takes out the trash, directs visitors, listens to stories and more stories.
Veterans many times only speak about their time in the service with another veteran. Victor, a veteran himself, saw the need and was instrumental in developing the Veteran-to-Veteran Recognition Program within Duke HomeCare & Hospice. This program honors the military service and sacrifice of hospice patients who are veterans by providing a special recognition presentation for the patient and his/her family.
The presentation involves family and friends, caregivers and staff standing as witnesses to the sacrifice and honoring what is perhaps the greatest untold story of the patient’s long life. Thank you, Victor Engle, for seeing the need and developing such a program.
