Cookout raises community awareness

Jul. 27, 2013 @ 11:24 AM

The Second Annual Community Awareness Cookout was held June 30at Piney Wood Park in Durham.

The purpose of this cookout is to raise awarenessof what is happening in Durham.  Maggie Singletary Lewis, who spearheaded the event, had a vision of providing something fun for the kids and informational for the adults in her community.  Born and raised in the Bull City, Lewis feels it is her mission to be an advocate for growth and positivity in her hometown.

Although it rained this year for the event there was still a great turnout.  The kids had snoBalls, balloon animals, face painting and games.  The adults had the same and also took advantage of the free health screenings from the Durham County Department of Public Health.

This year’s event would have not been possible without support from The Lather Lounge Hair Studios, Patrice Parrish, LoKaz Fashion, August Precision, Favor Desserts, Rivals Barber Shop, Inkwell Tattoos, Faculty Ent., 40/40 Hair Café, Naturally Yours Hair Studio and A Woman’s All Social Club, Hester Bail Bonds(Kenny Boo).

Mark your calendars for the Third Annual Bull City Book Bag Drive Aug.17 at 3 p.m. at Piney Wood Park. The goal is to give book bags filled with supplies to 2,000 kids in the Bull City.
