‘Pink Ribbon Build’ planned
The inspiration for an exciting new Habitat for Humanity home came in June 2011, when Margaret Rubiera visited the Duke Cancer Center following her diagnosis of breast cancer.
Although she was initially anxious, the warmth, kindness, compassion, and optimism with which she was treated throughout her journey made it easier to handle. She came to appreciate the nurses, lab techs, and other members of the support staff – the unsung heroes – who extend that same kindness and encouragement daily to the countless cancer patients who are engaged in a difficult and often heartbreaking struggle.
Rubiera and her committee of volunteers, several of whom are breast cancer survivors, envision the “Pink Ribbon Build” as an opportunity for cancer survivors and their family and friends to express their gratitude in very tangible ways to these outstanding caregivers and to honor people they have known who have been treated for cancer.
There are many caregivers and cancer survivors who work full-time; however their income is not sufficient to qualify for a conventional mortgage, and therefore they cannot experience the security and dream of owning their own home. Habitat for Humanity offers families the chance make a down payment of at least 250 hours of "sweat equity" as well as zero percent interest mortgages on safe, affordable, energy-efficient homes. A Habitat home will provide stability and pride to a family for years to come and will allow them to build equity for their future.
Rubiera and her committee invite the community to help the Pink Ribbon Build by donating or volunteering. To make a secure online donation, go to www.durhamhabitat.org, and click on “Donations.” Please designate the Pink Ribbon Build in the comment section. To honor someone with your gift, simply provide the name and address of that person, and the committee will gladly send an acknowledgment.
Construction volunteers are also welcome on the build site. Habitat hopes to break ground on the house in late April.
