Hanson enrolls in ROTC

Tyler P. Hanson has enrolled in the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) program at Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. 

Upon graduation and completion of ROTC Military Science courses at the host university, the cadet receives a bachelor's degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

At the host college or university, ROTC cadets receive training in leadership, management skills and military science courses needed to be an Army officer or a successful citizen in a civilian career.  The program trains cadets to succeed as effective leaders in any competitive environment.  Army officers serve as leaders, counselors, strategists and motivators, who lead other soldiers in all situations occurring in ever-changing environments.

Hanson is the son of Jim and Jill Hanson of Berini Road, Durham.

He graduated in 2011 from Riverside High School.

Ragland finishes basic training

Air Force Airman 1st Class Sherman T. Ragland Jr. graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Ragland is the son of Sherman Ragland Sr. of Raynor Street, Durham.

He is a 2009 graduate of Southern Durham High School.

Jones finishes combat training

Army National Guard Pfc. Bridgette D. Jones has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat and field maneuvers and tactics.

Jones is the daughter of Sharon Jones of Old Franklinton Road, Franklinton.

She is a 2012 graduate of South Granville High School of Health and Life Sciences, Creedmoor.

Burrus completes combat training
