Building Overtures and Opportunities in Science & Technology (BOOST)

1 1/2 years

A senior at the Durham School of the Arts, Alexis McKenney serves as a junior coach-in-training with the BOOST Program, which tries to excite middle school students about science. She supervises, teaches and encourages historically under-served youth in Durham. During monthly Science Saturdays and overnight trips to such places as Asheville, she manages to give a “stern look with an encouraging smile.

Alexis definitely has the “Midas Touch.” Her groups are the most engaged and her students always do the best work. “Her work has been so impressive that we now ask her to attend the coaches meetings for the Duke Grad students! Her insight and candid opinions have been golden as we look to restructure our program,” said her nomination for a Key Volunteer award.

A wonderful role model for these young people, Alexis is committed “to improving the world for the long haul.” Thank you Alexis McKenney for all you do!
