New Hope firefighters recognized
New Hope Fire Department held its annual awards dinner Jan. 12 to honor its members for service during 2012.
Firefighter Thomas Simon received the Firefighter of the Year award and Ryan Thomann received the First Responder of the Year award.
In addition to responding from home when the pager goes off, both volunteers have spent a significant amount of time at the station over the past year. By providing manpower during a duty shift, they have helped to assure equipment is ready for the next emergency, provided support on station projects and they were ready to respond on the first truck out.
“When most folks are at home in bed, these guys are at the station and available when 9-1-1 pages us out,” said New Hope Fire Chief Mike Tapp.
Capt. Shane Cannada, Capt. Jason Hackler and Capt. Eddie Walker were recognized for the Officer of the Year award. “The full time captains played a significant role in preparing for the ISO evaluation by the Office of State Fire Marshal,” Howard Pratt, president of the board of directors, said.
After substantial successful efforts by New Hope firefighters, and with assistance from neighboring departments, New Hope Fire Department improved their public protection classification rating from a Class 9 to a Class 6. Homeowners in the New Hope Fire District have acknowledged a significant cost savings on fire insurance premiums under the new improved rating.
New Hope responds from two stations, one at 4012 Whitfield Road and the other at 4700 Hwy NC 86 South and provides fire, EMS and support services to the residents of the district.
