Local nonprofits honored outstanding volunteers at the Volunteer Center’s annual Key Volunteer Recognition Luncheon April 29.

Eleven Key Award nominees from Durham County won the Governor’s Volunteer Service award.  The Governor’s Medallion Award recognizes the “top 20” volunteers in the state.  For the fourth year in a row, Durham County boasts a Governor’s Medallion winner.

The Durham County Governor’s Medallion winner was Atrayus Goode (Outstanding Mentor Category).

During his junior year at UNC-Chapel Hill, Atrayus founded Movement of Youth (MOY), a comprehensive educational and mentoring program for middle and high school students.  He currently serves as the organization’s unpaid executive director and holds a full-time job.  He built and maintained a 22-member volunteer staff and provided volunteers with training, meaningful connections and resources to ensure that staff members would achieve personal and professional success.  Last year, 200 students from 26 different schools across four counties were served.

As a result,  80 percent of students maintained a 2.75 GPA, 100 percent of Saturday Academy students completed at least eight hours of community service and 100 percent of seniors graduated from high school.

Ten county winners are selected and sent to the Governor’s Office --NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
