Duke men's basketball team wins national championship
On April 1, 1991, Duke became the first college from Durham to win a Division 1 NCAA Championship. N.C. Central won the Division 2 NCAA Championship in 1988. Duke was Durham's only Division 1 basketball team in college sports until 2010, when NCCU joined Division 1 of the NCAA .
Durham Bulls Athletic Park opens for its inaugural season.
The Durham Bulls worked long and hard for a new stadium and finally got it in April of 1995. Opening Day was pushed back many times because of costs and construction delays, but on April 6th, 10,886 fans cheered the Bulls on at the first game in their new stadium.
