DFM seeks to help SNAP/EBT customers

Jun. 07, 2014 @ 12:35 PM

At the Durham Farmers’ Market, we believe in increasing food sustainability, being good stewards of the environment, and providing families with direct access to fresh and local food.

Due to these strong beliefs, we are now accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at the market. With 50,000 SNAP/EBT customers in Durham, we are thrilled to be able to provide more families with the opportunity to eat healthy foods.
Research has now shown that a monetary incentives can cause a permanent shift in purchasing patterns for customers using food assistance benefits -- and this shift directly benefits food producers. In order to encourage our new customer base to shop at the market, we are planning to offer an incentive program, “Double Bucks,” to match up to $10 to help SNAP customers stretch their dollars even further. This means that if a SNAP customer spends $10, they will get $20 worth of fresh food.
In order to offer this program, we need your help. For every $10 given, one
family will gain the support of the Double Bucks matching program. Additionally, for every $100 given, 10 families will receive assistance, and so on. Our fiscal partner for the Double Bucks is RAFI, the Rural Advancement Foundation
International. You may contribute to this program at:

All donations are tax deductible, and sizable donors may be recognized on
the Durham Farmer’s Market website. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to our Double Bucks Program, please stop by the info table at the market or contact us at ebt@durhamfarmersmarket.com.
