-- Find out how you can help teach someone to read. Attend a volunteer orientation Monday at 6 p.m. at the Durham Literacy Center (1905 Chapel Hill Rd.)
-- Do you sew? Join the Hospice Quilting Bee on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (4321 Medical Park Dr. Suite 101).
-- Learn how you can get involved with Urban Ministries of Durham. Attend a volunteer orientation scheduled Aug. 22 at 2 p.m.
-- Are you interested in making a difference in pet overpopulation? Help AnimalKind post fliers in your area about their $20 FIX program and the SpayNC Helpline.
-- The American Red Cross needs drivers to transport folks to doctor appointments who have no other means of transportation. Volunteers drive Red Cross vehicles and are in touch via walkie-talkie with a dispatcher.
-- Help sort and bag food for needy seniors at the Durham Center for Senior Life. Volunteers are needed every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for a shift of two hours.
-- Help out at HOPE Gardens, a UNC sponsored community garden, on Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon (2200 Homestead Road).
-- Pitch in with a monthly mailing on Thursday from 9-11:30 a.m. at Unicorn Bereavement Center (1001 Corporate Dr., Hillsborough).
-- Do you like resale stores? Help out at the Paws4Ever ReSale Store. The proceeds go towards supporting their programs with animals.
-- Do you enjoy history? Help organize and plan the “Voices from the Grave Cemetery Tour” scheduled for Oct. 25-26. Help with promotional materials, ticket sales, rehearsals and guide training.
