Volunteer of the Week
Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Volunteer for 22 years
Mary Dawson was the first person to enlist in the volunteer program at Duke Gardens when it was first begun in 1991 and has remained active ever since. She has recorded 7,500 hours of volunteer service and is at the gardens nearly every day, arriving early to begin her pursuit of the weeds that persist to grow despite her dedicated efforts to eradicate them.
A retired librarian for the Perkins Library at Duke University, Mary naturally drifted to the gardens because of her love of horticulture. Her ongoing care and compassion for the horticultural displays at the gardens have helped provide much pleasure for the many visitors that come each year.
Mentoring many new volunteers, Mary is constantly recruiting and encouraging others whom she meets to join the ranks of the gardens’ volunteer program. Thank you, Mary Dawson, for your many years of service!
