Volunteer of the Week

Dec. 21, 2013 @ 12:45 AM

John B. McCormick

Duke Cancer Institute

Volunteer for 1 1/2 years

John McCormick, a young cancer patient himself, gives back to help others who are going through what he has experienced. He volunteers as a Pets at Duke coverage facilitator: He covers for planned and unplanned absences of the regular facilitator in pediatric oncology, radiation oncology, adult oncology and the brain tumor clinic. Covering two shifts a weeks is not uncommon for John.

John also started a Peer Connection Program in which he works with patients and their families who are undergoing bone marrow/stem cell transplants. Since he has gone through this process, he can help guide them through non-clinical questions that cause anxiety. John is an invaluable asset to the medical center because of his life experience as a patient and a volunteer.

John McCormick could have given up on life, but he did not. Thank you, John, for instilling hope in all who meet you!
