Pre-Thanksgiving markets offer local holiday fare

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and your local farmers’ market will be open with special hours this week. Your local farmers and local markets have been planning and planting for weeks in order to help you prepare the freshest, local Thanksgiving meal.

On Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m., the Durham Farmers’ Market will host a special Pre-Thanksgiving Market. About 25 market vendors will gather in the market’s pavilion on Foster Street with all the goods you’ll need for a local and delicious Thanksgiving. Our farmers will have creamy artisan cheeses, eggs, and fresh vegetables including broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, lots of fresh greens and plenty of sweet potatoes.

Local bakeries Scratch, Loaf, and Chicken Bridge Bakery will offer a wide array of hearth-baked breads, pies and pastries. In the meat department, you’ll find plenty of beef, lamb, chicken, pork, possibly some rabbit and perhaps a turkey or two (most turkeys need to be pre-ordered).

 For the non-meat eaters, Tempeh Girl will be at Market with lots of tempeh, tempeh sausage and tempeh bacon. To top it all off, Russ Lane, local cooking instructor, will be holding a cooking demonstration and will be on hand to answer your cooking questions.

Along with the Durham Farmers’ Market, seven other local, grower-only farmers’ markets in the Triangle will hold special pre-Thanksgiving markets on Tuesday afternoon as well. The South Durham, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Fearrington, Wake Forest and Western Wake Farmers’ markets will be open. The Chatham Mills Farmers’ Market will be open on Wednesday. So, even if you aren’t in Durham on Tuesday afternoon, there will be plenty of opportunities to shop with local farmers and make it a local Thanksgiving.

After the Thanksgiving celebrations end, the Durham Farmers’ Market schedule will change just a bit. The market will be closed on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This is the one Saturday during the year that Market is closed. The following week, on Saturday Dec. 7, the market will re-open with its winter hours.

The market will be open every Saturday through the winter from 10 a.m.-noon -- rain, snow, sleet or shine.  All winter long, the market’s vendors will offer locally raised vegetables, meats, eggs and cheeses, freshly baked breads and pastries, creative artisan foods and lots of crafts and gifts for the upcoming holidays.
