Exploring Durham

Incredible, affordable Duke Performances
Mar. 08, 2014 @ 01:39 PM

Durham has a bustling performing arts scene thanks to organizations like DPAC -- the Durham Performing Arts Center and the Carolina Theatre. That scene is enhanced by other organizations and venues that also bring diverse and exciting programming to stages throughout Durham to entertain residents and visitors alike.

Programs like Duke Performances really round out Durham’s offerings.  The organization hosts 60-70 world-class performances each season along with hosting visiting artist residencies and developing and commissioning new works.

The reasonably-priced performances are designed to engage students and faculty with performances in spaces on Duke’s campus, as well as out in the community at venues around Durham. The artists presented span musical genres including classical, new music, jazz, Americana, independent rock, international music, theater, and dance.

Duke Performances hosts the eclectic acts they curate at venues such as B.N. Duke Auditorium, Baldwin Auditorium, Page Auditorium, Reynolds Industries Theater, Sheafer Lab Theater on campus. They have also presented acts at DPAC and Carolina Theatre, as well as Motorco Music Hall, The Hayti Heritage Center, Manbites Dog Theater, and more.

During the 2013-2014 season, Director Aaron Greenwald brought The Blind Boys of Alabama, Ciompi Quartet featuring the Kruger Brothers, Fisk Jubilee Singers, Yuja Wang, Kayhan Kalhor and Imani Winds among others. There are still tickets available to shows this season and can be booked online at dukeperformances.duke.edu.

Did You Know?: Pete Seeger, Itzhak Perlman, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead have appeared at Duke University.
