Welcome Baby: Serving Durham for a quarter of a century
The Welcome Baby Family Resource Center has been in existence in Durham County for 25 years, offering hospital visits, support services and evidence-based programming to residents with children up to 5 years of age. In 1988 the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties provided start-up funding in the amount of $50,000 and the services of helping-hand volunteers to launch this successful program. Welcome Baby’s longevity is due in part to committed staff, dedicated sponsors and generous donors and volunteers.
Welcome Baby is a part of Durham County Cooperative Extension’s continuum of services. Current funders are Durham’s Partnership for Children and The Duke Endowment. Families, however, are the catalyst to the programs’ sustainability. Since 1988, Welcome Baby has served families raising more than 37,500 children, distributed over 13,610 new car seats, delivered over 650,000 developmental newsletters, visited 15,600 families in the hospital for the birth of a new baby and distributed 351 pac n’ plays with safe sleep education and has been the grateful beneficiary of over 41,000 volunteer hours. All services are offered in Spanish and English.
In light of recent economic uncertainties, Welcome Baby will celebrate its Silver Anniversary in a somewhat non-traditional way. Our focus has always been, “Families First,” and ensuring they receive services and programs that positively impact Durham’s greatest resources, our children. Over the next 12 months, Durham residents with children ages 0 - 5 are encouraged to take part in this on-going celebration by participating in free monthly awareness workshops. Each workshop is designed to support and educate families as they navigate through life from pregnancy to kindergarten.
