Local young woman selected for state program
On Sept. 14, 10 young women from across North Carolina were selected to participate in the North Carolina Distinguished Young Women of North Carolina program. These young women competed in five areas of competition to earn the right to represent their areas in this state competition.
Delecia Utley, daughter of John and Sharon Lawson, was among those selected. Utley is a senior at Hillside High School and will be representing Durham January 31 – February 1 in the 2014 Distinguished Young Women of North Carolina program at War Memorial Auditorium in Greensboro, North Carolina. The participants will be in Greensboro for 10 days preparing for the competition, visiting in local elementary schools and resident facilities for at risk youth, among other public appearances. These young women were selected through the “At Large” program. This program is designed to allow participants from areas across the state that do not have a local program an opportunity to participate in the state program.
The Distinguished Young Women of North Carolina is a state preliminary program for the Distinguished Young Women of America (formally known as America’s Junior Miss) program established in Mobile, Ala., in 1958.
The Distinguished Young Women of North Carolina program is open to all young women who are seniors in high school. Any young woman interested in this scholarship program can get more information online at www.distinguished yw.org.
