McCardle wins DWC scholarship
Gabrielle McArdle, a senior at Cary Academy, is the recipient of the 2014 Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship, given by the Durham Woman’s Club. This scholarship, in the amount of $1,500, is given each year to a Durham County senior who plans to attend a four-year college or university.
Cotten was instrumental in the organization of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs in 1902 and was very involved in the women’s movement at the turn of the 20th century. The criteria for the award are character, scholastic record, demonstration of ambition and leadership, potential to succeed and financial need.
Gabrielle plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall and pursue a career in nursing. She is the daughter of Dorrys McArdle and Patrick McArdle.
