Thanks to the generosity of the Durham community, 18 boxes filled with 277 stockings were shipped December 5th to three military units overseas.

Sponsored by Durham law firm Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, P.A., three Marine units, headquartered out of Cherry Point, were adopted for the 9th Annual Christmas for the Troops:  141 Marines from MACG-28 (FWD), 77 Marines from VMGR-252, and 59 Marines from VMU-2, all deployed in Afghanistan.  Each Marine receiveD his or her own personal stocking filled with a variety of useful items in time for Christmas.

The items were funded by donations from friends in the community. The firm did the shopping, and more than 50 guests attended the firm’s Stocking Stuffing Party Dec. 5th to fill the stockings.   The 18 cartons were shipped to Afghanistan the next day to ensure delivery by Christmas.

“Care packages are a welcome treat for deployed service members, especially when they are away from home during the holidays”, said firm Partner Richard Watson, who served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. “It’s a chance to thank our troops for their service and their sacrifice.”

Here is an email Watson received from the lieutenant of one of the adopted units:

“We greatly thank you for your support and willingness to conduct this kind act. I’m excited to see the Marines open the stockings. This will help immensely combat the “holiday blues” we encounter under the stress of family separation.”
