Granville County is situated northeast of Durham, snug against
the Virginia state line. It was named after John Carteret, the Earl
of Granville, who died in 1763.
The Town of Oxford is the county seat, and the downtown can boast
of one of the most attractive courthouses in the state (see photo at right).
The town was first incorporated in 1816 and was named after a large plantation
in the area called "Oxford."
Like most of eastern North Carolina, tobacco and textiles were traditional
industries, but an influx of modern industry is being lured to
the area by vacant land and an excellent transportation system. Granville County
is changing as it grabs its portion of the booming growth in the Triangle region.
