Pop-up offers natural products related to honey bees
Pop-up natural products shop on Franklin: A nonprofit called Roote has opened a pop-up shop on Franklin Street that sells North Carolina-made natural, sustainable or organic items.
David Coggins, executive director for the organization, said all of the products in the store related, in one way or another, to honey bees. The nonprofit wants to raise awareness about colony collapse disorder.
Also known as CCD, colony collapse disorder is a phenomenon characterized by the disappearance of worker bees from a hive, resulting in its collapse.
“We’re raising awareness and trying to fight CCD (by) trying to bring people’s attention to it,” Coggins said. “(We’re)…also trying to bring natural and organic products to people’s lives.”
The store is carrying products from Durham-based Burt’s Bees, the natural personal care products company that’s a subsidiary of California-based publicly traded The Clorox Co., from Culture Cow Creamery, and Cottage Lane Kitchen.
The nonprofit was launched as a joint business venture involving the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School and School of Journalism and Mass Communication, he said.
The shop is on the second floor at 149 E. Franklin St. It’s open on a pop-up basis during home football games. For information, go to the website www.rootenc.com.
Southern Season wine celebration: Each week through Sept. 29, the specialty food store Southern Season will highlight different wine trends and foods that complement the wines with in-store samplings and demonstrations.
In addition, the store will hold “Fridays Uncorked” events each Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the month. Tickets are $15 and can be bought in-person or by phone. The events will focus on the unique marriage of wine and food.
“This event is a great way to sample a variety of locally sourced products, from cheese and sweets to a wide variety of palate-pleasing wines and more,” Gena Sarrocco, general manager of Southern Season, said in a news release. “The Food & Wine festival will also give visitors an opportunity to experience our newly renovated and expanded wine department, one of the hallmarks of our store.”
