Two new principals hired for Chapel Hill schools

Patrenia McDowell and Lewis “Drew” Ware are new principals hired by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.
McDowell, who had been interim principal of McDougle Elementary since September and was the school’s assistant principal since 2008, now holds the permanent spot. She assumed those duties immediately after the board approved her position on Jan. 17.
Ware, currently principal at Alder Root STEM Elementary in Wake County and a former assistant principal at Vance Year-Round Elementary, will be the new principal at Estes Hills Elementary. He is expected to start at Estes in March. Until then, Susan Pegg will continue to serve as interim principal.
McDowell has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. She is certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Prior to joining CHCCS, she taught elementary students in Durham Public Schools and in South Carolina.
Ware holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
